Controller - Office Administrator

Job Description:
IBEW Local Union 1547 is a non-profit electrical union that covers the entire State of Alaska. The Controller is responsible for all the financial needs of the Local. The position of Controller/Office Administrator is a full time position that reports directly to the Business Manager of IBEW Local Union 1547. The following information is intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position, and is not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.
Primary duties and responsibilities include:
- The development of accounting policies, procedures, and internal control measures to ensure adequate protection of all assets
- Reviewing financial information with the Business Manager
- Provide technical financial advice and direction to management and staff
- Perform financial analysis as requested
- Maintaining financial records, systems, and accounts
- Preparation of annual budget
- Complying with federal, state, and local requirements related to financial reporting
- Responsible for month-end processes and issuing timely monthly managerial reporting
- Managing accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger accounting.
- Coordinating, supervising and preparing audit work papers
- Supervise accounting and administrative staff of 7
- Working with the staff on dues issues for over 4,000 active members
- Managing the statewide filing systems, including electronic filing
- Working with the investment advisors of all funds
- Working with the IT firm that supports the Local’s computer network statewide • Working with our property manager to lease our available space
- Working with our property manager to ensure all the needs of our buildings, statewide, are met
- Working with our insurance providers to ensure adequate insurance coverage
- Managing Trustee for the company 401K Plan
Required qualifications:
- Knowledge of current GAAP accounting and reporting
- Previous supervisory experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret contracts
- Ability to recognize and solve problems independently
- Ability to lead and supervise staff
- Ability to foster effective working relationships
- Innovative thinker
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to extract information from relational databases
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
Preferred qualifications:
- Certified Public Accountant preferred
- Previous work experience with a labor union
- Previous experience with DOL reporting, audits, LM-2’s
- Working knowledge of Sage 100
- OR, working knowledge of mid-level accounting software
